BIO:
MICHAEL J. DEPRAIDA: Born and raised in New York City. Classically trained in oil and pastels under painter Giuseppi Trottor and Eugene Kurakin. In 1997 he picked up a 35 mm camera, and his life has never been the same. Now full time fine art photographer working in both digital and conventional techniques, Michael has recently pulled up his New York roots to travel and photograph North America in his 34 foot motor-home "Van-go". He has made numerous television appearances and lectures frequently to photographic groups on digital technique. Michael’s work is published and exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His work is currently part of the permanent art collection of The New York Mercantile Exchange. Recent exhibits include: Nexus Gallery, NYC, The Museum of Art, ND, Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, NJ, The Afterimage Gallery, Dallas, Texas and The Frazer Gallery, Washington, DC. Throughout my life the interplay between shadow and light has fascinated me. The medium of photography has allowed me to indulge my continued fascination with light’s ever-changing moods. Once light and shadow are captured on paper it becomes a form of communication, and the goal of communication is understanding. As an artist, the challenge is to use this light and shadow to communicate thought and emotion to the viewer, if understood then I have succeeded.
