First contact is an artist book of Fons Bloemen with the historical reports of the initial encounters of Europeans and the Papua's of south New Guinea between 1606 and 1925. During more than three centuries these reports have been written by Spanish, Dutch, English, German and Italian Europeans, who described the Papua's of south New Guinea at the time they were not yet influenced by foreign goods or ideas.

At this first contact moment, nobody knew what to expect. The earliest explorers were later followed by many whites who came with many different reasons. Naturalists, anthropologists and missionaries have written reports with exiting memories at a time the influence of the western culture was minimal.

This book is dedicated to all the Papua's of south New Guinea.
